Zaandam?

Living Near Amsterdam as an Expat

Zaandam is a riverside town just north of Amsterdam, and it's a good choice if you want more space and calm without losing the city. A direct train from Amsterdam Centraal takes about 12 minutes, so relocating to Zaandam as an expat means a quieter, more affordable base with the capital nearby.

Moving from Amsterdam to Zaandam: more space, same city life

Zaandam is about 10km north of Amsterdam, and trains run frequently throughout the day. You can work, study, or go out in Amsterdam and come home to a relaxed town with the Zaan River, green surroundings, and generally lower prices than the capital. Many people who move here from Amsterdam find they get more room for their money and a calmer daily rhythm.

Windmills on your doorstep

Few places in the Netherlands have the Zaanse Schans so close. This open-air neighbourhood of historic windmills, wooden houses, and craft workshops is part of the Zaandam area. From Amsterdam Centraal, the train to Zaandijk Zaanse Schans takes about 17 minutes, followed by a 15-minute walk. If you live in Zaandam, you can reach it by bus or bike, and visit early in the morning, before the crowds arrive.

A town with character

Zaandam has a distinct identity of its own. Its colourful wooden Zaan-style houses, the river, and its industrial history make it feel different from other Dutch towns. The Czar Peter House is within walking distance of the station, and the striking hotel built from stacked traditional houses is another landmark worth seeing. The town centre is compact, with shops, cafés, and restaurants along the river, and most things are within walking or cycling distance.
